Earlier this year, the Sustainable Brands 09 conference took place in Monterey, Mexico. For those Kiwis who weren't able to make the trip, Sustainable Brands 09 Outreach - a breakfast event held at Auckland's Lumley centre - was a great way to catch the highlights.
The event combined live speakers (Northstar Manifesto's Duke Stump) with sessions from Monterey (Andrew Winton and Owen Rogers).
Duke Stump
Sustainable branding guru Duke Stump copped a bit of flack at the graphic design fest Semi-Permanent, but in front of a more corporate and brand-friendly audience he got a far better reception (though he still had the American-isms and pithy metaphors).
Visual notes are below. Also check out the Auckland Council writeup of his talk.
Andrew Winston
The first of two video replays, Andrew Winston (author of Green to Gold) took a far more hard nosed business approach with notes from his upcoming title Green Recovery. He emphsised the value of small changes - transport, lighting - with measurable results (e.g. Amtel saved $1.2million by changing over all their lighting to low-energy).
Owen Rogers
The final presentation was from IDEO UX head Owen Rogers, who gave his views on what makes a brand sing - passion, voices, honesty, participation, evolving - and how this might be applied to the sustainable 'brand'.
(Edit: Roger's talk is now available online)
All up, Sustainable Outreach 09 was a well-put together event with the talks covering a good range of what 'Sustainable Brands' can be about.
