Simon CraneProduct Designer

Simon is a human oriented industrial designer with a passion for design physiology and digital manufacture. Projects across a range of human factors have driven his skills in user research, concept development and user centred design.

Simon completed a number of research driven projects while in his final year at Victoria University, with a strong emphasis on designing for the body. His final projects included a universal medical bracing system for first responders, bronze winner of a 2014 Best Award for Student Product Design, and a fully fabricated shelving and furniture system. With a keen interest in the 3D printing industry, Simon completed a five month research project on the application of multi-material 3D printing, looking at recreating anatomy for the prosthetics industry.

In 2013 he studied for 6 months at the Technical University of Eindhoven in The Netherlands, one of the top research universities in Europe. There he gained new perspectives on design and competencies in user research, textiles, and materials. His main project worked alongside the Dutch Olympic Swimming Team on a prototype heart-rate monitor for athlete performance.

Joining the Locus team on an internship straight out of university, Simon worked on an existing project with Texus Fibre. He created a range of unique face mask concepts through psychological and anthropometric research to demonstrate the value of Texus’ materials to the air filtration market. Following this project, Simon joined Locus full time to bring his skills into all stages of the design process on varying projects.

Simon’s experience in concept generation, human factors design, and a passion for creating work that has an impact makes him a great fit with the team at Locus.
