Sean McElroyOwner at Krunch - Business Analysis and Improvement

Sean is a lawyer and economist with 18 years senior management experience in a wide range of businesses in New Zealand and Australia. After graduating from Otago University in 1996 he worked as a Business Analyst on an 18 month long McKinsey driven performance improvement project at New Zealand Aluminium Smelters. At the conclusion of that project he moved to Auckland and spent four years as Planning Manager in a Fletcher Building business. During that time Sean was responsible for procuring $75 million worth of steel annually and successfully led his team to reduce inventory by whilst increasing availability.

Sean left Fletcher Building to accept a General Manager role running a container handling joint venture between Port of Tauranga and Kiwirail. This was a pure logistics business and was his first exposure to leading a large and diverse team across multiple 13 sites. After two years leading this business he was offered and accepted a role managing the commercialisation of intellectual property generated by Air New Zealand’s engineering business.

After two years at Air NZ, Sean took on a short term project for the Ministry of Economic Development to try to lift the performance of New Zealand textile businesses. Through this project he met the owners of hundreds of businesses and was hired as CEO of a designer and exporter - Mokum Textiles. The business was under capitalised but during a four year period Sean was able to reduce debt and execute a trade sale. This outcome was primarily achieved through the application of rigorous financial and supply chain management.

During the sale process Sean met the owners of an Australian conglomerate supplying a wide range of customers from the Australian military to Myers and David Jones. Shortly after the sale of Mokum, he was offered a General Management role running a business that had not made a profit for several years. In an almost exact parallel of Mokum he was able to transform performance through the implementation of good supply chain and finance practices. After 12 months the owners enjoyed a $4m turnaround in net cash flow.

Sean resigned from his last role in order to spend more time with his young daughters and is now working as a consultant to business owners seeking to improve the performance of their companies through better financial and supply chain management
