Chris BrownDesign Engineer

Chris is a proactive, focused and determined professional with four and a half years of experience in Project Engineering and Mechanical Design. His practical experience with design and drafting of special purpose machinery and new product development provides an excellent cross over for product development and innovation.

Graduating from The University of Otago Chris started out as a Design Engineer under Scott Technology Ltd’s two year cadet programme. The first twelve months were spent in the workshop gaining experience in the fields of machining, welding, fitting and electrical. The remainder was spent in the drawing office involved with both machinery design and detailing, and research and development for new projects.

After demonstrating his strong computer literacy skills and ability to work both independently and in a team Chris successfully gained a position as Product Development Engineer with Fisher and Paykel Appliances. In this role Chris was working on the design and detailing of domestic cooking appliances. He developed skills in sheet metal, injection moldings, machined parts, glass; project planning to milestones; facilitating meetings; working to deadlines; communicating with suppliers, production, quality systems, sales and marketing; rapid prototyping, new concept design/development/validation and presentation; investigation and resolution of warranty issues and failures; whilst completing all projects on time and to budget.

Gaining international experience in the field Chris has contracted as a Design Engineer for special purpose machinery for both the medical industry and food sector whilst living in the United Kingdom. On a short term contract for Epilson Engineering he developed special purpose machinery for the food sector; and was responsible for design, detail and communication with suppliers as the assisting Design Engineer managing to ensure on-time delivery of the prescribed targets. His second contract based in the UK was with Olmec where he gained experience in design, detail and build; supplier liaison, clarifying technical requirements, generating assembly drawings and bills of materials, all whilst in close cooperation with purchasing and management to meet deadlines.

Chris’s proficient problem solving abilities and strong technical background, theoretical as well as hands-on engineering skills, and the experience he has gained in the medical, food, and appliance sectors are an asset to the Locus Research team. Chris has engineering experience which covers a wide range of materials and processes and has a first hand understanding of the production environment. He is currently working on a range of projects including both medical and construction related.
